ROB'S
SLEEVE NOTES...
|
1.
ON THE ROCKFACE
A fast, heavy 'riff' track to help get the album off to a flying
('V') start! And great lead vocals from Jason. The message is simple
- there may well be lots of people giving advice, and telling you
what to do, but at the end of the day when the talking's over, you're
invariably out there on your own.....on the rockface!
|
|
2.
FAITH
Ever fallen for someone, but been unable to find the right words
at the right time? If you have, this song's for you. I wrote this
especially for Steve to sing, and what a superb job he's made of
it. 'Faith' always reminds me of the Ardeche region of France, simply
because that's where I wrote the 'middle 8' section........"we
all know that life's a journey....."

|
3.
WISH IT WAS ME
Something of a showcase for the rockier side of Lorraine's outrageous
vocal talents. I love the contrast between her 'bluesy' verses and
in-your-face chorus delivery. Before the lyrics were completed,
the 'working title' for this track was.....'my Natalie Imbruglia
song!' But don't be fooled by the early acoustic guitar - the SG
gets it's fair share of airtime.....eventually!

|
4.
BLUE STANZA
The first of three instrumentals on the album, I guess this is the
nearest we've come so far to producing anything that could be vaguely
regarded as 'blues influenced'. Blue Stanza is unashamedly a guitar-oriented
piece, and whilst friends tell me that it invokes for them images
of distant landscapes and the like, I honestly don't recall what
was going round in my head when I sat down with the guitar one evening,
and thought.....6/4 time might be interesting.....

5.
WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS
The Beatles' 'Double White' Album was the very first LP that I bought
- a true classic - with this magnificent George Harrison song being
my personal favourite. We've attempted to stay faithful to the original,
whist perhaps adding just a drop more bite to the rhythm section.
Hope you like it?

6.
DOLPHIN RIDE
The track that takes us right back to those good old 'Saracen' days,
when this enigmatic instrumental seemed to strike-a-chord with rock
audiences everywhere. The composition, now well over twenty years
young, was inspired by the statue of the same name, which depicts
a boy riding a dolphin. This new version is dedicated to our great
pals - Paul & Janet - Dolphin Ride's biggest fans...

|
7.
JUST ME AND MY 'FLYING V'
Perhaps there are times when we all need to escape from the constant
bombardment of news - invariably 'bad' - forget the world at large,
and reinstate some 'peace of mind'? What do you do? Go fishing....paint....
.....drink....walk...? The guitar is one of my escape routes; I
just plug in the 'Flying V' and let rip. And judging by the way
Jason grabbed this song and made it his own.....so does he!

|
8.
ANGEL EYES
Just what is it about eyes? We look into 'pair after pair' everyday,
with no notable reaction, then suddenly two more seemingly random
glances coincide, and bang..........our world's upside-down! 'Angel
Eyes' seeks to capture such a moment of magic. It was infact Steve's
idea to record this ballad as a duet, and he & Lori have confirmed
the wisdom of that suggestion, with their brilliant vocal execution.

|
9.
SWORDS OF DAMASCUS
Another Saracen instrumental, originally penned as an ELP style
assault on the senses, void of any guitar whatsoever. Here, however,
it's been reborn with the guitar and keyboards sharing the limelight.
I hope it conjures up for you visions of ancient Saracen Warriors
and Knights Templars, battling for 'The Cause' in hot foreign climes...?
Dedicated to best chum and Saracen keyboarder Rich, who gave his
unconditional approval to this new arrangement!

10.
COME TO THE LIGHT
Very much the album's title track - all ten minutes of it! And with
no less than four special guests; in addition to Steve's soaring
vocals, we have also been treated to Paul's fine classical guitar
work, John's haunting sax solos, and Peggy's moody oration. The
inspiration here is simple but scary.....what really happens if
you enter an Event Horizon? Unsure.......?
When giant stars collapse they do not die....they become Celestial
Bodies.
Regions of Space, from which not even Light can escape! Immense..
yet invisible....
we know them only as Black Holes.....
Each
Black Hole has a boundary, a 'sphere of influence', the Event Horizon.
The point of no return, through which you may pass.....but there's
no turning back,
for you cannot avoid your future.
So
enjoy the ride!
